Argentina - At the End of the World - Glaciers, tango & endless expanses: a DREAMtrip
Marina and Chris, along with their agency Aventura Austral, turned our trip into an absolutely unforgettable experience thanks to their passion, professionalism, and warmth.
After we gave them a rough idea of our desired destinations, Mari and Chris put together a detailed itinerary and immediately included hotel recommendations. They also incorporated ideas and suggestions for cultural highlights, hikes, nature experiences, and more at every stop along our journey. As a result, we were already incredibly excited during the planning phase.
Our four-week adventure began in mid-August in Buenos Aires. For three days, we explored this fascinating city—which reminded us of Paris—enjoyed the atmosphere and the market hall in San Telmo, learned about the history of the colorful houses in La Boca, felt the passion for soccer, and refueled at the many bars.
We flew on to Bariloche, Mari and Chris’s hometown, full of anticipation. Thanks to the great organization, we picked up our rental car at the airport without any problems. Here, we felt the famous Patagonian wind for the first time and warmed up with a hot chocolate at one of the many chocolaterias. The area around Bariloche, with its mountains and lakes, actually reminds one a bit of Switzerland. Unlike in previous years, it hadn’t snowed there at this time of year for the first time in 2025, so (instead of going skiing as planned) we explored the many beautiful peaks (Cerro Otto, Cerro Campanario) on foot and enjoyed the breathtaking views. The absolute highlight of those days, however, was finally meeting Mari in person—someone we hadn’t met before.
After three days, we continued by car along the 7-Lakes Route, where we stopped for two days each in Villa Angostura and San Martín de los Andes. Along the route, there were countless spots offering breathtaking views of lakes and mountains. Once we arrived in San Martín de los Andes, we enjoyed the finest English tea time at Casa de Té Arrayan, complete with a view of the lake. The boat trip to Quila Quina, including a guided tour of Lanín National Park, was fantastic.
Back in Bariloche, Mari and Chris whipped up a traditional Argentine asado just for us and treated us to some delicious fish. Meeting them in person was definitely one of the absolute highlights of our trip.
We boarded the plane again, eagerly looking forward to our flight to El Calafate. From there, we took a tour to the Perito Moreno Glacier organized by Mari and Chris. The glacier’s incredible, unimaginable scale, the colors, the sounds of calving—and at the same time, the knowledge that this glacier, too, has been steadily melting for the past five years due to climate change—left us feeling wistful.
We then continued by bus along the famous Ruta 40 to El Chaltén to experience the long-awaited sight of Fitz Roy. Since it was the off-season, most restaurants and cafes were closed. This allowed us to lace up our hiking boots in peace and, along numerous trails, repeatedly enjoy the spectacular view of Fitz Roy, which remained completely cloudless for three days—something that apparently almost never happens. You’ve got to be lucky…..
The next flight took us to the final stop on our journey, the “end of the world,” Ushuaia. Here, winter finally caught up with us. At Hosteria Foike, it wasn’t the owner who greeted us—as Chris had announced in his daily WhatsApp update—but his son. What a stroke of luck, because he acted as our Uber driver for the entire trip and welcomed us with such warm hospitality. He drove us to the starting point of the hike to Laguna Esmeralda, where we put our crampons on our hiking boots for the first time. The next day, our destination was the Cerro Castor ski resort, where we found ourselves as “regular” skiers among all the pros and even spotted a few celebrities. It was an unforgettable experience to ski through the famous “Brecha.” The boat tour on the Beagle Channel that Chris and Mari booked for us took us to many small offshore islets where we could observe countless sea lions—it was sensational. We chugged through the Patagonian landscape on the little steam train “Tren al fin del mundo” and were offered mate tea by our Argentine fellow passengers. In the evenings, we feasted at the various restaurants Chris and Mari recommended to us—Argentine food is delicious: fish, empanadas, asado, steaks…
Our trip ended with one last night in Buenos Aires and a tango evening—booked for us by Chris and Mari—at a tiny bar featuring a spectacular performance. Adios, Argentina….
Thanks to Aventura Austral, who kept us updated every day via WhatsApp on all the important logistical details for each day and also gave us tips on things to do and restaurants to try, our vacation turned into an unforgettable experience. A big thank you to Chris and Mari for all your hard work. We’d love to plan another trip with you…., gracias por todo….
