Argentina - or: How I Decided to Discover Life on My Own
With great anticipation and a fair amount of nervousness, I landed in Buenos Aires. Originally, the trip had been planned as a couple’s getaway—but then we broke up, and I thought to myself: Oh well, now more than ever. A month just for me. Just being. Time in nature, time to read. The plan was simple, almost meditative.
Buenos Aires, however, had other plans.
No sooner had I arrived than I ran into an acquaintance who, without further ado, spent two days guiding me through the Argentine metropolis as my personal tour guide—including a private taxi, which is no small detail in this massive city. Anyone who’s ever shuttled from one sight to the next knows: Buenos Aires is big. Very big. The city pulsates, lives, breathes—and tempts you with good food at every turn. The people are cheerful and open-minded, so my start off to a great start.
Booked on a whim, flew straight there: the Iguazú Falls. There, I happened to run into an acquaintance with her family, and we spent two wonderful days at the world’s largest waterfall. The only downside: a full-blown sunburn. Be sure to apply sunscreen—plenty of it, generously, without skimping.
Back in Buenos Aires, we enjoyed another lovely evening at the harbor before I headed on to Patagonia.
In Bariloche, I was warmly welcomed by Christian. I spent my first few days in the beautiful lake region—it almost felt like home, just a little wilder and with more mountains. For my birthday, Christian, Marina, and their son took me out. It was a special birthday without family or familiar faces - and yet, or perhaps precisely because of that, one of the most beautiful.
I flew on to El Calafate, and from there took a direct bus to El Chaltén. The wind gave me a hearty welcome—with everything it had. There’s something magical about this little town: you know that the mighty Fitz Roy is waiting just around the corner, and you see hikers coming and going like the tides. I’d been advised beforehand to set out immediately if the weather was good. No sooner said than done.
It was the right decision. Getting up early is well worth it—in glorious weather, albeit with strong winds, I was able to enjoy the panorama to the fullest. Simply breathtaking.
Back in El Calafate, the Perito Moreno Glacier awaited me—and I simply couldn’t stop marveling at it. Magical and melancholic at the same time: You stand before this giant of ice and can’t help but think that global warming is taking its toll on it, too. A memory that will stay with me.
There are plenty of excursions and leisurely walks around El Calafate. A highlight of a very special kind: two nights at one of the region’s most beautiful horse ranches. The horseback ride was wonderfully relaxing, and the time at the ranch was definitely one of my favorite travel moments—even if the daily routine was fairly simple. Sometimes, doing nothing is the best thing of all.
Then came what everyone was talking about: the W Trek in Chile.
With immense anticipation, I set out on my multi-day hike in the back section of the W and worked my way forward. It kicked off with a canoe trip on the glacial lake—an experience I wholeheartedly recommend. Silence, ice, turquoise-blue water. Simply unbelievably beautiful.
To escape the large crowds of hikers, I set out every morning around 7 a.m.—a strategy that paid off. After the first day, I met two Dutch women, a good ten years younger than me, with whom I completed the rest of the route. What began as a chance encounter turned into one of the most beautiful memories of the entire trip. The landscape is breathtaking and one-of-a-kind—the tranquility, the nature, and, of course, the ever-present, relentless wind, which seems to be a staple of Patagonia.
For me, the W Trek is the must-do in Patagonia.
To wrap things up, we headed north to Salta. The city is vibrant, colorful, and has a lot to offer. The excursions into the surrounding area—cacti, red rock formations, a landscape straight out of a Western - are well worth it, even if the day trips are long and you spend a lot of time on the bus.
On one of these trips, we were caught in a heavy downpour. Roads were blocked, and a bridge had simply been washed away. What followed was an epic traffic jam—and at the same time, one of the most unexpected adventures of the trip. We were stuck, but not alone: strangers became acquaintances, and acquaintances became something like friends for a few hours. We drank mate together, shared food and snacks, and time flew by surprisingly quickly.
Argentina has so much to offer—adventure, tranquility, vast open spaces, breathtaking nature, and the soothing experience of being truly far away from home. It’s a country that stays with you. And that’s despite the fact that the wind in El Chaltén really gave it its all.
